  • The island of Spinalonga (official name: Kalidon) is located at the eastern section of Crete, in Lassithi prefecture, near the town of Elounda. The name of the island, Spinalonga, is Venetian, meaning "long thorn", and has roots in the period of Venetian occupation. This location is also the setting for Victoria Hislop's bestselling novel The Island and Werner Herzog's experimental short film Last Words. The island was used as a leper colony, from 1903 to 1957. It is notable for being one of the last active leper colonies in Europe. The last inhabitant, a priest, left the island in 1962. .There were two entrances to Spinalonga, one being the lepers' entrance, a tunnel known as Dante's Gate. This was so named because the patients did not know what was going to happen to them once they arrived. However, once on the island they received food, water, medical attention and social security payments. Previously, such amenities had been unavailable to Crete's leprosy patients, as they mostly lived in the area's caves, away from civilization.

  • Spinalonga has had a long past, once a leper colony created by the Greek State. Perhaps now the dark, unwanted island will free itself from it's dead branches.

  • Like a thorn in the beginning of it's existence is just a wild, unwanted being, yet blossoms into a beautiful flower, such is the fate of Spinalonga that has been transformed to an island of Hope. With patience all things bring out their true colors.

  • Tsikoudia or raki is a grape-based spirit from the island of Crete in Greece, very similar to tsipouro, made from the distillation of pomace, i.e., the pieces of grapes (including the stems and seeds) that were pressed for the winemaking process. The pomace is kept for about six weeks after the grapes have been pressed, in a tightly-sealed barrel, and then the fermented mush is distilled. It is a pomace brandy comparable to an Italian grappa, Spanish Aguardiente and Portuguese Aguardente, or French marc. Although it carries a strong taste, its alcohol content usually runs at about 34 percent for name brand. It is often home-produced by individuals in villages throughout Crete, and so the alcohol content can range from 60-90 percent. Each village will have one or two villagers who are licensed to distill, and for two or three weeks in late October / early November, the village stills produce the raki...This is commonly offered as an after dinner digestive. Indeed in many taverns it is usually offered, 'on the house', free of charge in combination with fruits and sweets after the meal.

  • Knossos, Greek ?????? pronounced [kno'sos]), also known as Labyrinth, or Knossos Palace, is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete and probably the ceremonial and political centre of the Minoan civilization and culture. The palace also includes the Minoan Column, a structure notably different from other Greek columns. Unlike the stone columns characteristic of other Greek architecture, the Minoan column was constructed from the trunk of a cypress tree, common to the Mediterranean. While most Greek columns are smaller at the top and wider at the bottom to create the illusion of greater height, the Minoan columns are smaller at the bottom and wider at the top, a result of inverting the cypress trunk to prevent sprouting once in place.[4] The columns at the Palace of Minos were painted red and mounted on stone bases with round, pillow-like capitals.
